It might be one of the Coachella Valley’s smaller communities, with a population of just over 5,000, but when it comes to the world of tennis, Indian Wells is a big-time player. Each year the city hosts the BNP Paribas Open – the sport’slargest combined men’s and women’s tennis tournament that’s considered the sport’s “fifth Grand Slam” – at the state-of the art Indian Wells Tennis Garden, which also operates as a year-round tennis club and seasonal event venue against the backdrop of the Santa Rosa Mountains. It’s here that both residents and visitors from around the globe get to watch the world’s greatest players in action (along with some of the culinary industry’s top chefs – from Wolfgang Puck to Nobu Matsuhisa – who launch onsite pop-up restaurants during the tournament). Indian Wells’ housing stock includes residences at some of the area’s oldest and most legendary gated golf communities where scions of business rub elbows, and golfers and non-golfers alike take advantage of the communities’ luxe amenities, often swapping out their cars for the fun of zipping around in a golf cart. Outside the gates, there are plenty of distinctive homes including Mid Century Modern houses along with the new Martyn Lawrence Bullard-designed Sands Hotel and Spa and its glam Mediterranean-meets-Moroccan eatery The Pink Cabana.
